In this episode we turn our attention to Michael Henry Adams, an author and historian who’s spent decades working to preserve Harlem’s architectural treasures.

Mr. Adams shares the story of writing “Harlem Lost and Found”, the definitive historical account of Harlem’s built environment and the Black culture it fostered. The book is richly illustrated with countless photos from the past, as well as modern day photography by Paul Rocheleau.

In less greedy times this book would convince anyone of the importance of saving what’s left of historic Harlem, but the destruction continues. In this talk, Michael Henry Adams touches on affordable housing, gentrification, and politics as core issues in the effort. It becomes clear that the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission should be ashamed for their dereliction of duty.
