September 7th is Brazil’s Independence Day, and last week when I realized it’s been a while since I heard about any Brazilian Day festival taking place, I started looking for an old video I shot back in 2014. That year marked the 30th anniversary of Brazilian Day in NYC and spanned more than 25 blocks, centered around W 46th Street which for years was known as Little Brazil.

Well, most of Little Brazil was recently demolished and is now just a gaping pit in the ground, waiting for a boring glass skyscraper to rise up. Maybe that’s why Brazil Day isn’t really a thing anymore? I’m just speculating. If anyone knows the actual reason why, please share them in the comments.

In any case, this flashback video takes us back a decade to the Brazilian Day festival of 2014, which marked its 30th anniversary with a bang! It spanned more than 25 blocks and featured one of Brazil’s biggest musical stars, Ivete. It was a really big deal for her to be giving a free concert in the center of Manhattan. I remember someone saying a million people showed up. It was an amazing event.

Relive the excitement of that day through this flashback video.
