After the first few minutes of information on the history of this National Monument, the video delivers a must-watch spiritual experience of the African Burial Ground that’s different from purely factual videos that usually fail to convey its spirit. This is a different, truly contemplative experience that moves you through the various elements of the monument with soul-stirring sensitivity. Hear the Yoruba drums and the voices of Black singers, absorb the symbolism, and feel a connection to our heritage that goes beyond words.

The serenity of the monument will wash over you with cascading water, birdsong, the wind in the grass, and carefully selected music that pays tribute to the Ancestors. The poetic beauty of this incredibly well designed monument, by Haitian American architect Rodney Leon, really shines through.

You’ll also hear the moving testimonial of a Jamaican-American visitor to the monument named Tamara, who I met the day I filmed this episode, as this brilliant sister describes her reasons for coming here, which will resonate with our people across the diaspora.

Please share this video with everyone you know who will appreciate a walk through history and a deeply spiritual space.

In the spirit of Sankofa… let’s learn from the past to understand our present and build the future.

Welcome! This episode is part 2 of a special three-part series honoring the 30th anniversary of the discovery of the African Burial Ground in Lower Manhattan. A week-long program of events at the downtown site marked this important anniversary.

Architect Rodney Leon, founder and principal of Rodney Leon Architects PLLC, is the Haitian-American designer of the African Burial Ground Memorial, which we toured in Part 1. In this episode, Rodney Leon joins us to give additional information about the meaning and significance of the seven elements that comprise the memorial.

The architect delves into the thought process and symbolism that went into designing the memorial to our African ancestors, and complements the tour of the African Burial Ground provided in Part 1 of the series.

Make sure you go back and watch Part One for a spiritual journey through the memorial, with artistic camera work, historical information, thoughtfully chosen music from the African diaspora, and a moving personal account from a visitor I met while shooting the episode.

Please share this video with everyone you know who will appreciate learning about the detailed symbolism of the African Burial Ground National Monument, a deeply spiritual space dedicated to those who came before us.

In the spirit of Sankofa… let’s learn from the past to understand the present, and move forward to a marvelous future.
