Discover the real Washington Heights, the setting for Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hit movie musical “In the Heights”. This episode shows the real street life and culture of the neighborhood, with shops, restaurants, people interacting on the sidewalks, and much more.
We visit the filming locations of the movie but also walk along the actual streets that connect them. This gives you a more complete impression of Washington Heights. Observe it with your own eyes! The walk commences down St. Nickolas Avenue, turns up Broadway, and continues with visits to J. Hood Wright Park for a view of the George Washington Bridge, Audubon Playground, and finally the Highbridge Pool.
In the video I also talk about gentrification in Washington Heights, something that’s causing rents to rise suddenly, pushing out families and businesses. This was part of the story of “In the Heights” but has been mostly ignored in media stories and interviews so I wanted to make sure its included here, since the same issue is affecting people of color and long-time residents all over New York City.
